“Shop Small!” during the holidays, says the Greater Monterey Park Chamber of Commerce, which is joining a national campaign to support small retailers as the holiday gift- giving season approaches.
According to the Small Business Administration:
- There are 23 million small businesses in the country.
- Small businesses have increased by 49% since 1982
- 54% of U.S. sales happen at small businesses.
- Small businesses have created 8 million jobs since 1990.
- Franchised small businesses employ roughly 8 million people, and make up 40 % of all American retail jobs.
The chamber is serving as a “Neighborhood Champion” by offering bags, fly, signage and social media to encourage shoppers to shop local retail businesses and restaurants as they prepare for the gift giving season, announced Dora Leung, President of the Chamber.
Local business owners can obtain free “ShopSmall” promotional items by visiting the Chamber offices at the historic El Encanto building, 700 El Mercado Ave. in Monterey Park. The Chamber staff will also be distributing samples at many new retail businesses on Garvey Avenue in Downtown Monterey Park and along Atlantic Boulevard where many small retail businesses are located.
The ShopSmall period officially begins Saturday, Nov. 26. It began as an effort promote local small business as traditional “Black Friday” promotions tend to benefits mostly big box retailers. Besides “Small Business Saturday”. the Greater Monterey Park Chamber is encouraging residents to shop small local businesses throughout the year. ShopSmall was founded and being promoted by American Express and UPS.
The Chamber will be posting photos and activities on its website at: http://www.gmpkchamber.org and on its Facebook and other social media pages. The Chamber encourages local shoppers to post photos of themselves as they shop local stores under the hashtag #shopsmallmontereypark and #shopsmall.
“The holiday season is very important to local retailers and restaurants as well as the city.” Leung said in encouraging local residents to ShopSmall.
The holiday season is also a great time to visit many local restaurants, she added. Monterey Park is well-known for its unique retail stores and variety of restaurants.
